What We Do

Working to preserve peace and quiet in our neighborhoods.

Our goal is to engage with local, state and government officials to ensure peace and quiet in our neighborhoods. Nothing is more precious than peace, especially in your own home. Quiet Florida was established to address the dramatic increase in noise pollution in Naples caused by illegally modified exhausts of motor vehicles and by aircraft traffic. Many of our residents have reached out to us with concerns regarding vehicle noise, especially on busy streets like Collier Blvd, Vanderbilt Beach Rd., Immokalee, and the constant and increasing airplane traffic. Naples Airport has experienced exponential growth over the last three years and the air and noise pollution are negatively impacting thousands of residents. Our quality of life has decreased drastically due to this chronic, excessive noise.

“Noise is unwanted and/or harmful sound. Noise is the new ‘secondhand smoke’.”

Noise pollution is detrimental to our health, and has been shown to cause a slate of adverse health conditions such as hearing loss or impairment, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other cardiovascular problems, stress, anxiety, depression, psychological problems, sleep disturbance and disruption of circadian rhythms, reduced productivity, concentration, and memory and interference with communication and social interaction. We use evidence-based research to educate residents and our elected officials to demonstrate the outsize harm caused by excessive, chronic noise.

We are working with Commissioner Burt Saunders, Transportation Management Services, and law enforcement to tackle the loud exhaust problem. Statute 316.293, established in 1979, clearly states that loud and/or modified exhausts are illegal. City and county law enforcement are working diligently to protect our quality of life. Recently, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office set up a number to call if a someone witnesses aggressive driving: 239-530-ZOOM.

Naples is our home, and we deserve peace and quiet when we are in our houses, on our decks, and in our yards. Quiet Florida encourages our elected officials, the Naples Airport Management, and law enforcement to be particularly vigilant regarding traffic and land use safety ordinances. The Board of Collier County Commissioners and our state and federal legislators should help us accomplish this.

We can improve the quality of life in Collier County by channeling our efforts through voting and bringing awareness to these issues. Quiet Florida supports H.R. 4892, which calls for the re-establishment of the Office of Noise Abatement and Control. We will lobby Florida Congressional Representatives and Senators to sponsor and vote for these and similar legislative initiatives that will equip local communities with the ability to participate in decisions to reduce the impact of low flying planes and funds to make local streets quieter.

We have the privilege of working with other groups across the country which are combatting noise, as well as with a leading national organization, Quiet Communities.
